Dressing for Family Portraits

Posted on September 2, 2008

When you’re having a family portrait taken, what you wear is important. Your clothing has to do several things, and to not do several others.

What you wear should not distract from who you are. Simple clothing in solid colors is always a good choice. When you look at this portrait in a few years, you want to see faces, not the awful fashion statement you’re making.

Your clothing should make you look like a family unit. Coordinating colors may sound cheesy, but having everyone generally match makes you look like you belong together.

We recommend:

  • Solid Colors
  • Jeans or Khaki pants
  • White, earth-tone, or brightly-colored shirts and dresses
We don’t recommend:

  • Busy or large patterns (e.g., paisley)
  • Clashing or conflicting colors
  • Trendy clothing (leisure suits, anyone?)

I have a question. What would you recommend for a Family Picture for the Operation Love portraits. My dilemma is that we have a 4 month old baby and all of her clothes are bright and Trendy, so we are trying to find something to kinda look uniformed as a family. Any suggestions?
    Thanks a million!

    Hi Liz!

For Operation: Love ReUnited portraits, we usually would recommend that the rest of the family try to wear a solid color shirt, something simple like a t-shirt or solid color button down or polo. Jeans or khaki’s would probably also be good. For babies, perhaps if you have something that would be fairly un-busy – like a simple dress or cute jumper. Give us a call if you need more ideas! Looking forward to seeing you and everyone else at the photo day at Ft. Bliss!

question: If I wanted to take two individual shots of my two daughters and not a family shot, can I do that?
