Trashing the Dress?

There’s a new meme going around in wedding photography circles. It’s called Trash The Dress, often shortened to TTD.

TTD is a post-wedding-day photoshoot where the couple get back into their formal clothes for something a bit more unique / fun / strenuous than a short walk down a clean aisle. Why? “Brides and grooms want awesome imagery from their wedding, period,” according to the WPJA.

We’ve all seen images from high-fashion photo shoots of models in designer gowns in unexpected settings: underwater, in the jungle, or at the beach. To get those images, the photographer and the model have to be willing to work in those environments – that means getting wet and dirty. For the fashion model, marketing director, and photographer, the resulting image is worth the loss of the model’s clothing. Increasingly, modern brides agree with them – the memories, the image, are worth the loss of a dress which traditionally spends most of its life in a box in a closet.

Maybe it’s the departure from tradition that makes trashing the dress so alluring, or maybe it’s that you just can’t resist the vision of those sparkling beaches and green palms. Maybe it’s a way of showing your commitment, by demonstrating that you’ll never need a wedding dress again. Whatever your motivation, the images that are captured when you stop worrying about your dress can be some of the strongest photos in your album. Capturing them can also be some of the strongest memories of your wedding – can you imagine going horseback riding in your dress, or telling your friends about it? What about going for a long, romantic walk in the mountains with your veil trailing in the wind?

Trash the dress sessions can be booked days or years after the ceremony. Anything you can imagine can be incorporated, and contrary to the name, the dress may be able to be cleaned afterward. If you’re planning a destination wedding, you might plan to take some in stunning locations on your trip, or wait until you get home to include some environmental portraits around your hometown.
