Jordyn and Joseph: Christmas Card Save-the-Dates
Posted on November 6, 2009
Tonight we had Jordyn, Joseph, and their cat Tux in to the studio for a few shots. The session was aimed at creating Christmas / Save-the-Date cards for their upcoming wedding. Jordyn had the great idea to pose with Tux as though she was a Christmas gift, in a wrapped box. Unfortunately, Tux wasn’t so into the idea; she was more than a little weirded out by our studio, and our three cats (even though they were banished for the evening). After much persuasion, Joseph was able to get her to calm down enough to pick up, and we got a few frames before she jumped out of the box. While Tux was cowering in a corner, we did a few more traditional poses before donning the gloves and putting Tux back into her carrier for the ride home!
Here’s our favorite from the session, and possibly our all-time favorite pet shot. Roz calls it “Norman Rockwell does Psycho”. We were rolling on the floor with laughter after this shot:
This one’s a bit more traditional:

Liz & Pat: Engagements at the Plaza Theater!
Posted on November 1, 2009
Friday night, Jason and I went down to the Plaza theater to meet up with Liz and Pat for their engagement shoot! We’re shooting their wedding later this month, and we’re so excited to be working with them. We’d never shot inside the Plaza before, and they’re pretty strict about what you can and cannot do inside the theater. But with careful planning, and security escort, we were able to shoot their entire session in this beautiful theater!
We traipsed all over the place – I only started to figure out my way around the maze of mezzanines and hallways and elevators towards the end of our shoot – that place is HUGE! As an added bonus, our escorts showed us to the smaller theater, which was almost as stunning as the main stage. It’s all so ornate!
We had a fabulous time shooting your engagement photos, and can’t wait to get your album rolling!

Jeanette & Jelilah: Engaged in Las Cruces!
Posted on October 31, 2009
Jeanette and Jelilah took us around Las Cruces last Saturday for their engagement session! We began the afternoon Downtown, where our favorite shot in front of the Rio Grande Theater was modified by an outdoor art exhibit. After some careful thought and discussion, we decided that the stack of blue jeans was supposed to be a yucca – but we’re still not 100% sure about that. In need of refreshment, we made a Starbuck’s pit stop before heading towards the NMSU Botanical Gardens and Mesilla. We wrapped up the day with portraits in front of the mountains.
We’re looking forward to photographing their wedding next fall at Kent Hall. Jeanette, Jeliliah, it’s always great working with you; we can’t wait to see you again!

Adrian + Deanna: San Antonio Engagements
Posted on September 20, 2009
Roz and I spent three days in San Antonio last weekend, to shoot engagements for Adrian and Deanna. Even though their wedding isn’t until next April, they wanted to get the engagements done before the weather turned in San Antonio. Fair warning – we shot for 3 days, and came back with something like 400 frames. This is an epic blog post.
We met Deanna and Adrian at our hotel on Saturday. Roz got a great deal on the Omni on the Riverwalk, so we started shooting on the Riverwalk. There are a ton of awesome spots down there, and throughout downtown, although we had to readjust to shooting in lush vegetation instead of desert sun! If you haven’t seen the San Antonio Riverwalk, it’s an absolute must-do. This was my first trip there, and I was totally blown away. After walking around downtown, both on the Riverwalk and at street level, we headed over to the McNay, San Antonio’s art museum.
Roz and I spent some time while we were there talking about the difference between Mexican and Spanish architecture. The McNay is a great example of the latter, and it’s surrounded by green lawns and gardens.
Our final stop on Saturday afternoon was the Pearl Brewery. There’s an old locomotive parked outside the Pearl Stables, and the round stable building was a great backdrop. The Riverwalk extends past the Brewery, so we walked over there as well.
We made plans to meet up later that evening to do some night photography downtown, and then Roz took me on a driving tour of her old stomping grounds, in the Texas Hill Country just north of San Antonio. We headed back to the hotel late in the afternoon, and took a short nap. When we woke up, we found that the rain had followed us back into town. While rain was a welcome change for the drought-stricken city, it forced us to reschedule our night session.
On Sunday, Deanna and Adrian took us to St. Mary’s, their Alma Mater, for some portraits on campus. I was struck with deja vu when I saw the bell tower there – it looks quite a bit like the one on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus. Then we headed to the sunken Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park, which Roz remembered as not-so-nice, but which the city has reclaimed and completely worked over since she lived in the area. The rock paths, wooden bridges, lush vegetation, and the waterfall combined to make this a must-do location for portraits! Then, we all rode the 1/3 scale train that loops through the park, which gave us a chance to rest our weary feet before we took off our shoes and went wading! One of the bridges in the park is a shallow ford, which we all walked across, stopping in the middle to take pictures of course!
On Monday, Roz and I headed to Fredricksburg, a very touristy German town, for the morning, and then drove up to visit our good friend and fellow photographer Laura in San Marcos. After dinner at La Fogata, back in San Antonio (their margaritas should be illegal, but then I’d be sad), we met Deanna and Adrian for photos after dark in Downtown and on the Riverwalk. We also captured some around the hotel before bidding them farewell for the evening.
Guys, we had a simply incredible time working with you both, and it’s always a treat to visit a new city (or to return to a previous home). We simply cannot wait for your wedding next April!

Matt + Tara : Engagements
Posted on August 19, 2009
Screaming Light took Matt and Tara down to Mesilla for some incredible engagement portraits last week! Roz and I had a great time working with them; I just wish their wedding was also going to be in the area. Unfortunately for us, it’s planned for Maine, where Matt’s stationed permanently. We sure had fun shooting their engagements though!

El Paso Engagement Session: Rick and Rocio
Posted on June 29, 2009
On Sunday we met up with Rick and Rocio in downtown El Paso for their engagement shoot! Even though it was baking hot, we had a fabulous time running around downtown, finding awesome little doorways and iron gates to take photos around! We headed over towards the Plaza Theater, which is an AWESOME place to do engagements, and shot a neat series of photos there! After we finished up there, we went down to the bar district, and found a really cool old alleyway to shoot in. It smelled kind of bad, but we managed, and it was worth it! The shot of Rick and Rocio in the big brick archway was done there.
Then we drove up to Scenic Drive, and did some stuff overlooking El Paso – it’s a stunning sight! I hadn’t been up there before, and wowza there’s some cool houses up there on those hills! I’ll have to buy one and call it my summer home I think. After shooting there, we drove out to UTEP, and walked all over campus. We took some individual shots of Rick and Rocio outside their respective college buildings – and thank goodness the Business College building was open – ahhhh, air conditioning and water fountains!
It was a blast guys, your wedding is going to be coming up before you know it, and we can’t wait!

Maria + Genaro: Engagement Session 2nd Edition
Posted on June 28, 2009
What a crazy weekend! We’ve been shooting like CRAZY all weekend, and I’m finally starting to get to a few blog images! On Friday, we headed down to El Paso, TX for the second edition of Maria and Genaro’s engagement session – at Cohen Stadium, home of the Diablos! We were totally excited about this shoot, I love it when a couple has a passion for doing things together, and Maria and Genaro are huge baseball fans. Luckily, the folks at Cohen Stadium stayed a little later than usual and allowed us to access the entire park for our shoot, and even put “Will You Marry Me” on the big screen above the field. Jason said he could see it from the highway as he was driving in! How awesome is that?!
The wedding is coming up fast you too, it was lovely to see you both again – and I didn’t have to have surgery this time! (It was right after shooting their first session that I fell ill and ended up in the hospital, luckily, this wasn’t a repeat performance!)
Can’t wait for their wedding!

Engagement Portraits: Maria+Genaro in Ruidoso
Posted on April 23, 2009
On Sunday, our first appointment of the day was up in Ruidoso, at Inn Of The Mountain Gods with Maria and Genero. They booked Screaming Light for their wedding some time ago, and it was time to get their engagement photos done! This is actually the first of two separate sessions we’ll be doing with them – our next one will be down in El Paso at a baseball game – isn’t that awesome? Theyre both big baseball fans, and we’ll have access to the field, press boxes, and dugouts for their next engagement portraits!
Maria is actually the one who got us into offering our awesome engagement guestbooks. She asked us when they booked their wedding, if we could do something like that for her, and of course, we knew we could! So we got our heads together, and came up with what is now one of our most popular options! So a big thanks goes out to Maria for that.
We had a great time at the Inn, it was beautiful as usual. It was a little chillier than we anticipated, but we still had a great time, and some of my favorite images are of the two of them snuggling in front of the awesome copper fireplaces in the lounge.
After our shoot, we went down and had an awesome lunch at the casino’s buffet with the two of them, and they are so fun to hang out with. We really had a blast, and I am SO excited to shoot the rest of their engagements, and their wedding! Congrats you two, you rock!

Sean & Tracy – Operation Love ReUnited
Posted on February 8, 2009
Today was special – Tracy and Sean came up from Ft. Bliss for a very special session. Screaming Light Studios joined Operation: Love ReUnited several months ago, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting our first scheduled shoot. It was so exciting to meet this wonderful couple! Sean is deploying to Iraq soon, and we wanted to get some great portraits of the two of them together before he leaves.
We started out in the studio, with some pretty classic stuff, mostly as a warm up. Then we headed out to downtown Las Cruces for even more portraits. I finally got to try out a wall downtown I’ve had my eye on, which was awesome! We wandered around, stopping at the Rio Grande Theater, and then behind the theater as well. Then we headed out to our favorite spot in the desert for some more outdoorsy type pictures. The wind made for an awesome shot of the two of them in front of the Organ Mountains!
We had so much fun you guys, thanks for coming up here for your session, and thank you Sean for everything you do for our country!
