Jeanette and Jalilah: Wedding in Las Cruces

Posted on September 23, 2010

Our second Labor Day weekend wedding was Jeanette and Jalilah’s, held under the clock at NMSU. We met Jeanette at a bridesmaid’s house before the ceremony; she had several members of the Crossroads City roller derby league serving as bridesmaids and groomsmen, which made for an interesting pre-wedding event, to say the least!

Jalilah rode her white Honda motorcycle to the wedding ceremony (the same one we brought into the studio for a session when we first met Jeanette and Jalilah); she looked great in a white tux, and Jeanette’s gown was incredibly intricate. The local Unitarian Universalist minister officiated the ceremony. She met the controversy surrounding same-sex unions head-on; both Roz and I were in tears when Jeanette’s sons stood up and said their vows alongside their parents.

After an incredibly emotional ceremony, we photographed the bridal party on the nearby Horseshoe before driving out to Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park for more bridals and the reception. Jeanette couldn’t have chosen a more perfect day for the wedding; the blue sky and perfect sunset were the backdrop for photos and dinner.

After dinner, the DJ spun up the dance tunes and the floor filled up. Jeanette and Jalilah are long-time clients and good friends; photographing their wedding was tons of fun.

Cindy and Mano: Albuquerque Botanical Gardens

Posted on September 23, 2010

Cindy and Mano’s was one of two Labor Day weddings for Screaming Light. Although we don’t usually double-book a weekend, we couldn’t turn down either of our incredible weddings, so we had a busier-than-usual holiday weekend! After driving up to Albuquerque on Friday for the rehearsal and scouting out the gardens with Cindy, we sat down for a wonderful meal at St. Clair Winery & Bistro, where we met some of Mano and Cindy’s family and had a great time chatting into the evening.

On Saturday, we met Cindy at the gardens early for some amazing bridals in my favorite section of the gardens, the children’s garden. This fairytale area is fronted by a giant topiary dragon guarding a castle turret and moat, and contains giant vegetables (Cindy, a strict vegetarian, posed with giant carrots and inside an enormous pumpkin), an oversized ant colony (and gigantic ants), and too many wonderful twisting tunnels, bamboo groves, and incredible portrait spots to describe. Mano, who’s not nearly adventurous as his bride, refused to let us do any couple portraits in this section – spoilsport :-)

The wedding ceremony was held in the Ceremonial Garden, which is roofed by an enormous trellis covered in vines. Cindy’s brother, a professor of Anthropology, delivered a wedding sermon/lecture describing different marital traditions from around the world before pronouncing the happy couple man and wife. After more bridals in the more traditional sections of the Gardens, Mano and Cindy joined their guests for a cocktail hour in the Moorish Garden before adorning to the reception.

The most unusual part of the reception was the venue – it was held at the Sharkbite Cafe, part of the Albuquerque Biological Park, and the featured guests were undoubtedly the sharks, tuna, sea turtles, and giant puffer fish swimming behind the glass which formed one whole wall of the dining area. All of the guests, especially the children, spent the first hour of the reception just gazing in wonder at the marine life. Cindy opted for a wide variety of differently-flavored mini-cupcakes; every variety we sampled was wonderful, and none of the flavors were traditional – although the lemon were exceptionally good.

Never one to let life get to her, Cindy dealt with her recently-twisted ankle in typical fashion: she ordered a bight-pink ankle wrap adorned with a silver skull-and-crossbones from Germany, to compliment her vintage-style tea-length wedding gown. The “guest books” were a tradition new to me: Cindy and Mano had their guests sign bottles of wine, which they will open on future anniversaries. I think that may be the best way I’ve seen yet to carry the well-wishes of your wedding day throughout your married life.

Thanks for doing a wonderful job with the pics! I had so much fun! Oh, and though I keep calling it the Shark Bite Cafe, the actual name is the Shark Reef Cafe. I like my name better. LOL

Kali & Josh: El Paso Wedding

Posted on September 23, 2010

We met Kali at her mom’s house on their wedding day; she had just finished having her hair and makeup done, and the flowers arrived shortly after we did. While she got into her dress, Josh and the guys got dressed across town, and before we knew it, it was time to meet down at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the ceremony.

One of the best parts about being a wedding photographer is that not only do we get to document all of these gorgeous ceremonies and witness all of the love and caring that flow before and during the event, we also get to participate as guests. St. Patrick’s is possibly the most elegant cathedral in El Paso, and working there is always a pleasure.

After the ceremony, we took Josh and Kali over to Memorial Park for some outdoor bridals; we worked quickly and finished the session before anyone melted in the El Paso sun. We arrived at the newly-renovated Doubletree hotel well before the reception was scheduled to start, so we took advantage of the extra time to create some truly stunning bridals around the hotel.

When guests began to arrive, we finished up the family photos and posed formals, and then got down to the serious business of kicking the reception off right. Josh and Kali had possibly the best first dance ever; they had obviously been working on the choreographed number for quite a while, even though neither of them could keep a straight face.

When we took our leave, the dance floor was still rocking, and didn’t look likely to slow down for a while. Josh and Kali, we wish you the best of luck!

Brooke and Ryan: Short and Sweet!

Posted on September 23, 2010

Brooke and Ryan had a very romantic intimate wedding ceremony on the banks of the Rio Grande in Las Cruces, with a panoramic view of the Organ Mountains in the background. About 30 friends and family gathered for the ceremony, and then met us at Lorenzo’s in Mesilla for an equally-intimate reception meal. Between the ceremony and the reception, we created some incredible bridal images; our favorite is easily the photo of Brooke holding a bunch of brilliantly-colored balloons on the bank of the river.

Amanda + Ryan: Lincoln, NM

Posted on July 25, 2010

Amanda and Ryan chose the charming historic town of Lincoln, NM for their wedding location. Lincoln is usually more associated with Billy the Kid than happily ever after, so Roz and I weren’t sure what exactly to expect when we drove up on Saturday morning. We met Amanda’s mom at the Ellis Country Store, an historic structure that has served at a doctor’s office, private residence, and several other things, but which is currently reincarnated as a bed-and-breakfast and event venue.

Amanda and her bridal party got ready at the Hurd Museum’s Garden Cottage, about 10 miles from the Country Store, while Ryan and the guys got dressed at the store, in the Old Millhouse, which has been converted into half-a-dozen guest rooms downstairs, and a loft bedroom upstairs, all in rustic finish. As we drove from the store over to the Old Lincoln Church, the sky started to darken; Ryan watched with apprehension as the clouds opened and deluged the church 15 minutes before Amanda was due to arrive.

New Mexico weather changes quickly; by the time Amanda arrived, the sun was breaking through the clouds, and the only remnant of the sudden downpour was the stunning double rainbow arching over the church and the mountains behind it. The small church was filled to capacity with friends and family, who cheered as the newlyweds made their way down the stone steps after the ceremony.

The Ellis Country Store, and in fact the whole town of Lincoln, could have been designed for a small, romantic wedding. The store has a large, sagging porch awning, covered with wooden shingles and held up by ivy-covered rough-hewn posts, which faces a lush green lawn, ringed by a split-rail and barbed-wire fence. The grounds are filled with small vignettes which are perfect photo settings. Amanda set up tents on the lawn for the dinner tables and dancing, and there were also several groupings of wicker sofas and chairs, lit by large free-standing post lamps.

As dusk settled over the party, several of Amanda and Ryan’s friends and family stood up to share their experiences of the couple. Ryan and Amanda cut the wedding cake under the ivy on the porch, then danced together surrounded by their guests.

Amanda and Ryan, thank you both for including us in your wedding.

Monica + Jesarey: Las Cruces Wedding!

Posted on July 25, 2010

We met Monica at the Hilton Garden Inn, where she got dressed before the wedding. We took advantage of the hotel’s lobby to shoot all the details – her ring, jewelry, shoes, and all the other little things that made her wedding dress sparkle! As soon as she was in her dress, we drove over to St. Albert’s on the NMSU campus for the ceremony.

While guests were arriving, the groomsmen had boutineers pinned on, and before we knew it they were walking down the aisle! St Albert’s has a very open layout, which let us get some great photos from spots we usually can’t get to.

After the ceremony, we shot a family formals on the alter, then took the wedding party across the street for bridals at Kent Hall and other areas on campus. Soon, we were on our way to the NMSU Golf Course Clubhouse for the reception.

After dinner, dancing got underway – I’ve never seen La Marcha carried off in such a confined space, everyone was having a blast. I’m still not sure how Jezarey wound up wearing granny panties over his tux pants during the dollar dance… Needless to say, it was an epic party!
